Masters Memberships!

As a reminder …. if you are swimming with Wellesley Masters you must be registered with United States Masters Swimming, as this is a Wellesley College requirement. Please register with USMS and send me your membership number and expiration date as soon as possible. Please don’t make me be the bad guy and not allow you to swim until you are USMS registered.

Training Lanes

Starting Monday, September 6, I would like to have designated lanes in order to foster better training among the team. Wellesley Masters has grown, with kudos to Chris, to the point where we can now pair lanes based on training speeds. Pairing lanes is a concept that many high schools, colleges, USS teams, and yes masters team implement to allow for better pool management and competition during practice.

Starting Monday and moving forward (until the college team begins morning workouts in which case we will have to condense), lane assignments will be as follows, starting with lanes closest to the door you enter the facility:

Lanes 1, 2, and 3 – Practice 1 intervals
Lanes 4, 5, and 6 – Practice 2 intervals
Lanes 7 and 8 – Practice 3 intervals

We can adjust accordingly based on numbers, but this is how I would like training lanes assigned.

If you have any questions as to which lane you should swim in, please ask.

No Practice Sunday 9/5. Practice on Monday 8-9:30am

No Practice on Sunday, Sept 5. Practice on Monday, Sept 6 will be from 8-9:30am!

Wellesley Masters Announces New Head Coach

As most of you are already aware, because of my recent career change (moving from the Athletic Department to the Information Services Department here at Wellesley), in September 2010 I will be stepping down as the Head Coach of the Wellesley Masters Swimming program.  While I have had a tremendous amount of fun with the program and am incredibly proud of how it’s grown, it’s time to pass the torch to a new Head Coach who I feel confident will continue our tradition of having a great program with challenging workouts.

After months of searching with Head Collegiate Coach Bonnie Dix and a panel of our collegiate swimmers I am happy to announce that Carlos Vega will be taking over my duties as the new Assistant Coach of the Collegiate program and Head Coach of the Masters program!

Carlos swam for Kenyon College were he majored in Economics and went on to earn a Masters from UMass – Amherst in Sport Management.  While at Kenyon, Carlos earned 11 All-American honors, was the 2002 National Champion in the 200 Fly, was a member on 4 National Champion relays, and was a member of a National Record holding relay (400 Medley Relay).

Carlos has served as an assistant coach at Amherst College, Kalamazoo College and Case Western.  He has also worked for IMG in the golf division as a client service associate, consulting executive and an LPGA international travel coordinator.  He has a tremendous understanding of our sport and a keen knowledge of business.

Carlos is currently in the process of moving to the area but will be on deck meeting people and coaching with me during the last week of August.  He will start his head coaching duties in September!

Thank you all for an incredibly two years!  While I’ll be taking a few months off to let Carlos get settled I do plan on popping in every once in awhile to let all of you kick my butt in the pool!

Best Regards,
Chris

Hi Gang,
